(approx 1 minute read - and 22 minute watch)

The divorce rate in the UK is 42 per cent.

The median duration of opposite sex marriages that ended in divorce was 12.9 years in 2022. It was 7.5 and 6.3 years for male and female same sex couples, respectively.

Men’s Mental Fitness was pretty shocked at both numbers; higher and shorter than we had expected.

So are people simply marrying the wrong person? And if so, why?

Enter Alain de Botton, founder of The School of Life, acclaimed writer and philosopher. He has some thoughts on this topic that are well worth a listen.

Eight years ago he wrote an opinion piece in The New York Times titled: Why You Will Marry The Wrong Person

A couple of years later he recorded a video on the topic. That video currently has nine million views.

The article and 22 minute video are thought provoking philosophical gold about why marriages fail.

MMF isn’t going to give you any spoilers, we simply recommend you take the time to read or watch it.
